Robotics competition helps students discover rewards of STEM | Iowa
Jagwires Iowa team

Meet the “JagWires”, the team of 24 students from Southeast Valley High School, home of the Jaguars (see what they did there?), vying for a spot at this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition Iowa Regional.

The FIRST Tech Challenge is designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots in a 10-week build period to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The ultimate goal of FTC is to reach more young people with a lower-cost, more accessible opportunity to discover the excitement and rewards of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The JagWires’ competition robot is named Teddy. The students named the robot in honor of the team’s sponsor, Black Hills Energy, whose corporate office is located near Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The robot’s full name is Theodore Roosevelt and even bears a photo of the iconic president.

The JagWires won their first meet and will now advance to the Super Qualifier on February 1. To stay up to date on the team’s progress on the road to Regionals, go to svjagwires.weebly.com
