🔺 Nov. 13, 8:30 p.m. MST - Power has been restored to nearly all Black Hills Energy customers impacted by today's regional transmission outage. Some customers may be experiencing partial power in areas of their home or business. If that’s the case, you are encouraged to check for a tripped breaker or an outlet with a Ground Fault Indicator (GFI) that you need to reset.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to emergency managers, first responders, local and state officials, and city and county leaders for their partnership and response in keeping our communities safe.
We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by our customers throughout the day. For ongoing updates, please refer to blackhillsenergy.com/outages.
🔺 Nov. 13, 6:45 p.m. MST - We are continuing to restore power to South Dakota and Wyoming customers impacted by today’s widespread outage. Multiple utilities were impacted by the regional transmission event which caused generation facilities and substations in both states to go offline. Our system was also impacted.
To protect system safety and stability, we are using a phased process to restore power. It is critical that our power facilities ramp up slowly to prevent damage to the system. We appreciate your patience and will continue working this evening to restore service to all impacted customers. Estimated restoration time is 10 p.m.
We encourage customers to stay informed by visiting our social media channels such as https://www.facebook.com/blackhillsenergy/ or visiting Black Hills Energy’s outage map at blackhillsenergy.com/outages.

🔺 Nov. 13, 2:40 p.m. MST - We are working to restore power to customers in our service territory in South Dakota and Wyoming affected by today's regional electrical outage. Our team is now re-energizing the system in segments. As of 2:30 p.m. today, approximately half of our impacted customers have had their power restored. We will continue to safely restore power to our customers this afternoon and potentially into the evening hours.
This widespread outage impacted multiple utilities across the region, resulting from an event on the regional transmission grid outside of the Black Hills Energy footprint.
We encourage customers to remember these safety tips during an outage:
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help preserve food.
- Use flashlights instead of candles to avoid fire hazards.
- Don’t use generators indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- Non-functional traffic signals, treat as a four-way stop.
We encourage customers to stay informed by visiting our outage map at blackhillsenergy.com/outages.
