Shooting Hoops for a Cause in Rapid City, South Dakota

Three Black Hills Energy employee teams enjoyed a little March Madness of their own while raising money for a Rapid City nonprofit. One team even brought home the top prize.

Each year, the Corporate Free Throw Challenge raises funds for the Club for Boys in Rapid City - a nonprofit with a mission to provide a positive experience for boys to develop self-esteem and character in a caring, safe and fun environment.

Competing against 56 other corporate teams, the Black Hills Energy squad made up of Eric Brouillette, Jaden Mitzel, Marc Eyre, Eric Nelson and Patrick King earned first place by making 114 of 125 free throws and four out of five half-court shots. Eyre was also the top shooter for the event. Another Black Hills Energy team took home second place.

During the annual challenge, teams pay $200 to shoot 25 free throws per person, plus an additional round of 25 free throws divided among team members. Businesses can also sponsor teams made up of Club for Boys members. At this year’s event, 26 teams and more than 100 boys from the club competed.

Now for the really good news - this year’s Free Throw Challenge raised $17,000 for the Club for Boys. Money raised helps the club keep membership costs low, at just $12 per member annually.

The 2022 challenge is already scheduled for March 21 and 25, so start practicing now.
