Make your smoke detectors work for you

To help prevent fire danger here are five things to keep in mind.

  1. Install smoke detectors on every floor, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Place them on the ceiling or high on the wall.
  2. Test detectors monthly by pressing the test button to ensure they are working.
  3. Replace batteries at least once a year. Consider detectors with long-life batteries or hardwired systems with battery backup.
  4. Replace smoke detectors every 10 years, or sooner if they malfunction. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for replacement.
  5. Keep detectors clean by dusting them regularly. Use a vacuum or a soft brush to remove dust and debris that can affect performance.
