Any event that brings people together in warm weather is bound to generate a lot of soda cans, water bottles and other recyclable materials that typically end up in the landfill.
During the Cass County Fair in Weeping Water, Nebraska, last August, our service and operations team in Papillion, Nebraska, partnered with Keep Cass County Beautiful (KCCB) to collect and sort through recyclable waste at the fair. KCCB is a non-profit organization focused on spreading awareness about recycling and sustainable living.
Together, KCCB and our volunteers helped collect and sort more than 1,400 pounds of recyclable items. The team filled a 20-yard trailer and two truck beds, then hauled the items to recycling centers away from landfills. In addition to manpower, Black Hills Energy also donated $500 to cover the cost of the recycling trailer.
“I love that Black Hills Energy is always looking for ways to partner with organizations making a positive impact in the communities we serve and Keep Cass County Beautiful is definitely a great example of a nonprofit making a difference,” said Meredith Dougherty, operations supervisor in Papillion. “Our team had a good time coming out each morning during the fair to help collect and sort the recycling and it was amazing to see how much we were able to accomplish.”
